1 DAY DRAGON LAKE HIKE
Impressive hike to the alpine lake of the Mount Tymphi!
The most impressive attractions in Zagori begins!! Our Dragon Lake hike begins in the village of Mikro Papigo (in the middle of a lush forest). As we traverse the beautiful forest, we reach the imposing rock formations known as "Towers of Astraka" continuing the path we arrive to Astraka's mountain hut in an altitude of 1.950 meters (a nutrition lunch break is waiting for you!).
After a well needed rest we set off to the mythical Dragon Lake. The amazing alpine lake is called Dragon Lake by the locals! (drakolimni in Greek) is believed to be a remnant of the Ice Age. This severe environment of limited nutrients, huge variations of sunlight during the summer and acute fluctuations in temperature in the winter time, made the Dragon Lake into a unique ecosystem!
Its waters are home to the Alpine Newt. It is approximately 10-12 cm long with an impressive orange-red color in the lower part. It looks like a Dragon...!! Dragon lake has the most stunning view!! To the north we see Smolikas mountain and Aoos Valley and to the east Mount Gamilla. After the breathtaking view, we are heading back to where we started (Mikro Papigo) following the same route.
